What va do you recommend and why? Filter or bagless/cannisterless?

I'm buying a new va and I want consumer feedback from other persons. I have been to the retailers, viewed sites and read up on the material. The one thing I have not done is talked to others, this is the reason for this question. I currently own a Hoover-bag type.
